Manchester City are reportedly facing one of the most severe punishments in Premier League history as the league prepares sanctions for alleged breaches of financial regulations.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, 360vibez gathered that the reigning champions could be hit with a substantial points deduction that would all but confirm relegation to the Championship, in addition to a heavy fine.
The report claims the punishment follows a verdict last month in which City were allegedly found guilty of more than 100 breaches of financial rules covering the period between 2009 and 2018. The charges relate to the club's long-running Financial Fair Play case.
Manchester City have strongly denied any wrongdoing, maintain they have irrefutable evidence to support their position, and have reportedly lodged an appeal. The Premier League is yet to officially confirm any sanction, with the final outcome dependent on the ongoing legal process.
Double Points Deduction Considered
In a major development, the report suggests the Premier League is considering a punishment that would extend beyond this season. City could reportedly start the 2027/28 season with a second points deduction in the Championship, making an immediate return to the top flight extremely difficult.
While any sanction that carries over to the EFL would require approval from the English Football League, it is understood the EFL is unlikely to block the Premier League's proposed penalties.
Despite reports of a potential demotion, a direct drop to League Two is considered unlikely. City are expected to be allowed to complete their remaining Premier League fixtures for this season before any relegation is enforced.
No final decision has been confirmed, and all reported sanctions remain subject to appeal.
